Safe Steps is a digital solution (Safe Steps app & Commissioner dashboards) that is ideal for any Clinical Commissioning Group looking to reduce the number of preventable falls for older people.
Built to NHS Digital standards, Safe Steps provides a secure, digital risk assessment tool - enabling a standardised and effective approach to falls management - including early identification of high-risk residents, falls reporting and real-time evaluation.
How did the Innovation Exchange help?
The Innovation Exchange is supporting SAFE STEPS to partner with Clinical Commissioning Groups to pilot SAFE STEPS in both care homes and intermediate care units. These pilots will be used to gather further outcome data to demonstrate real world impact and generate evidence for longer term health economic impact evaluation. SAFE STEPS is already being piloted in three sites Wirral, Bolton and Tameside (all paying at reduced price) and have collected 6 months of clinical evidence.
Impact & Outcomes
Early analysis suggests a 28% reduction in the number of falls over the six-month period at pilot sites. The evaluation will provide the evidence base for a full business case for longer term investment across the health and social sector, with the potential to save the NHS up to £500m a year – the equivalent to paying for 28,000 new nurses for frontline care.
