The problem: 4.7M UK people have diabetes, and 12.3M more are at risk.
The solution: evidence from systematic reviews shows that structured education leads to improvements in glycaemic control and patient wellbeing. The challenge: Take-up of group-based education is poor, at 11%.
The Innovation: A QISMET-certified digital programme, accessible to users in their own home (or care home) via a mobile phone, tablet or laptop. This package of engaging education is currently being adapted into 14 additional languages.
Evidence base and cost savings: NHS England state that structured education could deliver savings of £93 per person (5 years) or £129 (10 years). The RCT of X-PERT Diabetes (Deakin et al. 2006) demonstrated an average HbA1c reduction of 0.6% (7mmol/mol) along with clinically significant weight loss, reduced CVD risk, and a reduced requirement for prescribed medication. This equated to an average saving of approximately £100 per patient, findings backed by an independent cost-effectiveness analysis (Jacobs-van der Bruggen et al, 2009).
